3 Abbeys: Dom Hans van der Laan’s Wooden Furniture (1957-1995)
"Fully engaging with Dom Hans van der Laan's furniture is a challenge when approaching his body of work.
The focus usually revolves around the architectural effect of his design,
relegating his furniture to simply another means of achieving spatial harmony.
However, considering the meticulous application of his architectural principles to the furniture,
it is worth exploring these pieces as independent design entities.
My project coalesces and organizes the furniture designs of three Abbeys into a self
contained body of work. I designed a timeline that highlights the stylistic connections
between typologies and the rhythmic geometry of his design language. Additionally, viewing
his work chronologically offers insights into his iterative process. When viewing the furniture
collectively and without contextual distractions, often overlooked design elements become
apparent."
